- COME ALONG. always wandering, SEEKing REDEMPTION. -
There's Starclan, and there's the Dark Forest. But there's also the Middle Realm/Void. Unlike Starclan and the Dark Forest, the Middle Realm or Void is not an actual separate plane of the afterlife. Instead, it's a plane that melds in with the world of the living, but the residents wander as ghosts.
The residents of the Middle Realm or Void are cats who don't deserve to be in Starclan, but also aren't evil/bad enough to reside in the Dark Forest. Agnostic cats can also be found here quite often, though they usually carry onto the Endless Plains far more.
Wandering Spirits are feared more often than Starclan or Dark Forest cats, mostly due to the fact they don't harm you with your dreams, but actually physical pain.
POST ORDER > Intro & About > Appearance > Abilities and Rituals
The wandering spirits in the middle realm are different than just having a faded body and certain type of aura as it is with StC and TDF. They are slightly faded, but their markings are really difficult to see, so you typically can't make them out as a different cat than others, and mostly just see their eyes for a long time.
Although, their appearance can open up to you the more you get to know them, and the closer they are to their redemption they so desperately seek.
NOTE FOR PRESETS AND CHARACTER DESIGN IN GAME Design your characters as normal! But if you want it to be more like how it is described here, you can make the markings darker, or keep your design dark and make it brighter the closer it is to redemption, which will take frequent updates. Presets can also have an overlay or faint black over it as well. For the eyes, I'd make their eye color normal, but if you're changing the pupil, make it the emotion they would usually be feeling most often. Don't worry about updating it through emotion changes. That'd be tedious. But maybe they can also be animated if possible? I dunno.
During a case of seeing visions from Wandering Spirits, it depends on how the spirit decides to display it to you. The cats in the vision could have hollowed eyes like holes, or be completely void of different features, like their mouth or eyes. Example one and two (beginning of video).
Have you ever heard the saying "The eyes are the window to the soul"? That quote is taken more literally in this context. Their eyes are how they're depicted in the GIF above, where the pupils change to different colors.
SIGNS AND EMOTIONS DEPICTED IN THE PUPILS
Dilated Pupils - Open, willing to communicate, not afraid to show how they feel.
Slitted Pupils - Closed off, wants to remain relatively hidden, attempts to intimidate.
Pupil Colors and their Emotions These colors can be vibrant or faint/dull depending on how strongly they feel the emotion. Different hues of the colors like cyan could mean one interpretation of their emotions is stronger than the others, for example, you'd see cyan for shyness more than a deep blue for sadness.
Red:Anger, embarrassment, passionate, and lustful. Blue: Shyness, sadness, and calmness. Yellow: Cowardice, happiness, or caution. Green: Disgust, envy, sickness, friendly, or greedy. Grey: Depression and emotionless. Black: Cold or mournful. Pink: Cheery, embarrassed, and love. White: Sick, shocked, scared, cold, and mournful.
As for what they can see with their eyes, it's very glitchy.
AURAS & TRAILS OF WANDERING SPIRITS ------------------------------------------------------------
When a wandering spirit has a trail, it usually depicts how they died. Auras would be different for those killed by wounds than by a tragic accident. As a spirit walks, the effects behind them eventually fade away, and leave no trace that they were there in the first place.
🩸 WOUND AURAS Wandering Spirits who've been killed by a wound inflicted on them typically won't have much more of a trail than bloody pawprints, however, they do keep their wound marks.
If a cat dies from a slash across the throat, the throat scar stays, and sometimes drips "blood".
Heavier wounds are more likely to drip fake blood than thin scarring, which will only glow a faint red color.
💫 SICKNESS AURAS Depending on what sickness a cat dies of, the aura can vary.
If a cat dies from greencough, for example, a spirits breathing is more pronounced with a cloud of sickly green gas, which won't affect any cats around them. That effect would also vary on the type of cough they have - white for whitecough, green for greencough and black for blackcough. You can also possibly find that their voice remains somewhat raspy, however, it's possible for that to go away over time.
I've hidden the list of different auras in a spoiler, which may be updated in the future. If one doesn't show up here, you can ask a staff member for what it might be.
💊 POISONED AURAS I could've put this under sickness, but I decided to keep it separate. With the several poisons we have under {herbs}, there are different auras for them, some of which are atypical to other circumstances. However, with all of these, their paws leave toxic green pawprints behind.
DEATHBERRIES A spirit who's been killed by the use of deathberries can be found to have the deathly berries tucked in their ear, while also somewhat reeking of death more than others. You can also typically find a trail of the berries' seeds trailing after the spirit.
HOLLY BERRIES Holly berries are typically found more on kits than any other spirit of an older age. Similar to deathberries, you can typically find holly berries tucked in a kits ear, along with the leaves. You can find a trail of holly berries trailing after the kit.
FOXGLOVE SEEDS For spirits killed by the use of foxglove seeds, their paralysis carries on into the afterlife, which means they typically aren't very mobile. They also have the flower tucked into their ear.
DEADLY NIGHTSHADE For spirits killed by the use of deadly nightshade, they can typically have the black berries tucked into their ears, and have a more prominent shadow than others, who don't usually have them.
WATER HEMLOCK For spirits killed by the use of water hemlock, their mouths would still be foaming.
🦊 PREDATOR AURAS Predator auras aren't that much different from Wound auras, having all the same attributes with some differences.
Depending on the predator, for animals like foxes, bears, etc. with fur, their fur will be tucked into the spirit cats ear. Birds of prey feathers can also be tucked in their ear, but can also be anywhere in their fur.
For snakes, their bite mark will be more pronounced in a bright orange to offset from the blood, and you can possibly see venom dripping from it.
🔥 ENVIRONMENTAL AURAS Environmental auras come from drowning, being caught in a fire or a rockslide, anything involving nature.
Cats caught in fires can have red hot paw print trails, and still look scorched. Their paws can have fire on them, or they could be smoking.
Drowned cats can still look as if they're dripping water, and their pawprints are blue and damp. They can sometimes sound raspy.
Being caught in a rockslide or cave collapse can give the spirit a dusty trail and pawprints, and while they're mostly back to normal, there might be an area that isn't completely fixed.
💤 NATURAL AURAS Natural auras are those for cats who die naturally of old age. These spirits can typically be slower, but not as creaky with old bones. Their pawprints can be white and faded.
- COME ALONG. always wandering, SEEKing REDEMPTION. -
Wandering Spirits, similar to the living cats, have their own rituals to follow. Unlike the living though, they have some abilities that they put to good use.
ABILITIES _____
💫 MEMORY MANIPULATION Wandering Spirits are able to manipulate a cats memories, displaying them to their victim at any time, even with some changing if they wanted to. This is very manipulative, and is used sparingly with their subjects.
👁️ VISIONS Similar to Starclan, these spirits can display visions to their victims as a way to warn them of something to come, or convince them to join their cause. Unlike Starclan though, their visions are corrupted and warped, making any words spoken unclear and difficult to understand.
The visions are also set in the void, being a plane of endless darkness and no direction. Cats are shown as silhouettes, spirits, anything other than normal. They can also end up faceless, lacking a mouth, eyes or anything in between (other than important features like the maw or ears). In a sense, it's created to freak out the victim, and give them a sense of unease.
Visions can be still images, moving cats; there's different kinds of visions, but they always have something in common. That being set in a dark void, an endless "void" sound similar to ringing, warped and corrupted visuals and audio, and giving off an unsettling atmosphere.
But what can the visions be about? Depends on what the spirit wants to show. Could be something that'll happen soon, anything that would convince their victim to help them, something from the past, anything of significance.
🔮 THE KARMA SYSTEM
The Void has another name for a reason - quite literally being, a middle realm. To survive and move onto the other two realms, a Wandering Spirit must make good or bad decisions with the cat they're assigned to guard, and in the realm they live in.
A good decision gives them good karma, a bad decision gives them the opposite, to give them an overall score. A score in the negative region marks the spirit as having bad karma, and they undergo their final judgement, going over intentions and rule of thumb. If they have a negative score for decisions, but have good intentions, their score is void of the karma for those actions, while any ill-intended actions stay counted.
Spirits who have more good decisions than bad, gradually transfer into a Starclan form, with bands of fire around them. Spirits with more bad decisions than good are more dissolved and gaseous, almost smoky.
Any spirit who's neutral, stays there for good. Sometimes, the Judge may decide to keep a bad spirit in there regardless, to keep them from aiding the Dark Forest in their evil ways, or to make them suffer more in a corrupted plane. Their corruption is elevated, and sometimes, it's even difficult to move.
THE KARMA SCALE
The karma scale has milestones to it so that there isn't any confusion as to where you land. Though, the karma points differ on actions.
REMINDER: This is for void cats seeking redemption only. This doesn't affect anyone else, anywhere else. (These are example numbers. Not exactly limits.)
The worst possible score a spirit can get is -1000 karma points. The best possible score a spirit can get is 1000 karma points. The neutral zone sits at 0 - 200 karma points.
RITUALS _____
🌩️ THE ANNUAL ASSEMBLY
The history of this is unknown, but every 5 moons, all of the Wandering Spirits go to (the gathering place or the place with the basket). It is said that they speak to trapped spirits that are unable to leave their prison, and are told how to free them. This is unknown to living cats.
🦴 FASTING
Unlike Starclan, who hunt for sport, and the Dark Forest who have no prey, Wandering Spirits also have to hunt for food to survive. However, prey isn't always present. They show up during a period called the Big Feast. This is typically coming from the recovery from leaf bare, with the clans hunting more to fill their empty stomachs.
More than half of these fallen prey spirits go to the Void to ensure that they don't disappear, and still have a chance to right or wrong themselves. For most of their spiritual lives, they fast, feeling hungry. In a way, it's meant to show them the suffering they would endure in the Dark Forest - however, this may just be preparation for evil spirits, making them numb to it.
🍖 FEASTING
The Big Feast takes place little before their assembly, making sure they're well fed and stable minded. When a lot of prey is hunted in the living world, most of the preys spirits appear in the Void at once, and the Wandering Spirits go onto a feeding frenzy, hunting all they can to fill their stomachs. Hiding prey is nearly impossible in their plane of existence, except for the important hot spots they see, which would be pretty predictable.
Some spirits may succumb to their greed, others may not mind as much. This does affect their decision making.
