Hanahaki Disease
aspen hollow misc. feature
- The Disease of Unrequited Love -
NOTE: We took some creative liberties with this feature, mostly considering cats can't perform surgery on other cats, which would be the way that Hanahaki disease is cured. For now, Hanahaki has NO KNOWN CURE. It will in the future, when we know the best route to decide on a cure. Although there isn't a cure, there's way to help making a characters life last longer, as you'll read later in the thread.
If you don't know what Hanahaki disease is already, it is a sickness originating from Japanese folklore. Hanahaki is an illness that comes from one-sided love. The patient infected with this will cough and throw up flower petals, and in worse cases closer to death, blood and full flowers - stem and all. Typically, the disease is cured by surgery, taking them out by the roots in the patients lungs, but would lose their love for the cat they're pining for. The other cure with no side effects would be to have your feelings returned.
Don't know what flower to use for your character? Here's the list of flowers and their meanings! The flower can be based off of the personality of the character yours is pining for, related to their name, or just for the flower meanings.
There are three stages to Hanahaki.
STAGE 1 - THE PETAL PHASE.
The petal phase is when the patient coughs up flower petals. Most would experience this first stage at least once in their life, and it typically goes away naturally.
STAGE 2 - THE FLOWER PHASE.
The flower phase is when whole flowers are coughed and/or vomited by the patient. It occurs when the unrequited love deepens, causing the flowers to bloom freely. It can be quite severe and tiring. Chances of it being healed naturally are now quite slim
STAGE 3 - THE BOUQUET PHASE.
The bouquet phase is when the patient vomits full bouquets of flowers. If the unrequited love only deepens and the feeling is not mutual for long enough, the third phase starts. Few people are struck by this extreme stage of the pathology. It is deadly and the changes of survival of the patient are very slim. As a full bouquet of flowers can be too much for the body to eliminate, it can get stuck in one’s respiratory tract, usually the trachea, blocking it completely and suffocating the patient. If they do not obtain medical help during one of those blockages, it would lead to death.
The worst cases of Hanahaki are often found to happen during Kenshin, when cats are showing their love for one another romantically. Because of this, cats can often find their clans medicine cats doing medical checkups on everyone, checking up on who has contracted the illness and try to figure out a permanent cure while keeping an eye on them.
SOME KNOWN, POSSIBLE REMEDIES TO PROLONG OR EASE TROUBLE
Making the cat Wail/Yowl
This isn't the most effective way to help, but it may help the cat begin to cough to clear their throat. Hasn't been proven to loosen the roots at any point in time.
Forcing the cat to throw up
Making the patient puke even if they're not prompted to needing it by their body can help clear up their throat. Doesn't affect the roots.
WHAT NOT TO USE
Honey
Don't make the patient consume honey while having Hanahaki, the petals/flowers can get caught in the throat and cause suffocation or make it harder to breathe. If the patient needs honey for a sore throat because of it, or another reason, use it in moderation, and make sure to clear their airways before having them consume honey.
